i just may need a drink.

today is election day!  as much as i believe in exercising my/our right to vote, all the political commercials, flyers, billboards and debates exhaust me!  so tonight, while watching decision 2012 i will most likely be exercising my right to drink!  & if you’re going to drink, you need a bar.  i find it only appropriate that today i share with you some of my bar’s shining moments along this campaign season.

my bar wasn’t always a winner.  a little love & elbow grease with help from my mom turned this dud into a stud.

the bar is always the center of the party!  here it’s filled with festive cinco de mayo decor.

with a great color and some gorgeous nobs from anthropologie, this dresser turned bar is a fun focal point in my house.

cheers & get out & VOTE!

fall is back, we’re back!

well, it’s only been a few months right??!  apologies for the absence!  animal & i have fully neglected diamondcats due to a busy summer filled with heat waves, friends, family & love.  but dry those tears diamondcats, we are back!  the last time we were acquainted it was just about to be one of the hottest summers i remember here in so cal.  i was platinum blonde & had just begun the room re-vamp. officially out of my heat coma, FALL IS HERE!

platinum no more.  a more toned down blonde for fall.  my grandma, jojo will be so happy!

i’m slowly but surely making progress on the room!  a rug from ikea adds a fun pattern.  a new/old mid century dresser i found from a local re-saler is perfect for my space.  & some basic sheers give just enough privacy and let in light.

my new obsession!  a brass bird i found from a thrift store.  the best $10 to add a quirky accent to the dresser.

i’ve had my eye on a lamp from west elm for months to put on my bed side tables & found a similar one from target for half the price!  nothing like a good deal to put a smile on animal’s face.

and lastly, i have to keep my feet warm!  my fall slippers from target.

evening eclipse.

these last few weeks have been crazy!  on top of my regular busy life animal and i decided it was time for a fresh new look in my room.  when i moved into my apartment 4 1/2 years ago, my room was my go to project.  i was inspired by images of the graduate with deep green velvet curtains, gold accents & stripes on the wall.  instead of painting i found some fabulous black striped decals that were displayed on half of the room’s walls.  it was an amazing space that inspired some great photo shoots & became the back drop with my gal pals over at lynn’s rags & tangerine tree photography.  but as time moves forward so does age & taste.  the ikea & thrift store furniture had played it’s part & it’s time to move on!        i knew i wanted a completely different look & decided to paint & start fresh.  this is going to be a work in progress but i think i’m off to a great start!

a glimpse at the before with the wall decals.

the new wall color. “evening eclipse” from valspar.

decals can be a quite misleading when it comes to being safe for the paint underneath.  it ripped up quite a few spots so there was a lot of prep work of sanding and smoothing it all out.

it’s a whole new feel!  the color is a fun pop that acts as a universal complimentary color.  and with the new accents i’m on my way to a whole new modern space.

an eccentric pillow that has inspired the whole feel.

a new mid century inspired night stand from west elm is the perfect start to a set of grown up furniture.

animal is exhausted from all the hard work. a nap in the sun will re charge him for the next project.

vibrant love.

tis the season…to get hitched!!  well, at least a handful of my friends are celebrating their love through the spring & summer seasons here in san diego.  because of the gorgeous weather, most of the weddings i’ve been & will be going to are daytime, outdoor events.  finding a comfortable, appropriate outfit can sometimes be tricky.  black seems a little too depressing to be celebrating love & white is a huge no-no, so sticking with fun vibrant colors in a cool pattern seems the way to go!  here is my summer wedding attendee go to outfit!

dress & belt from anthropologie. shoes miss mooz. purse h&m. necklace forever21. sunglasses TOMS.

more than just a style icon

my mom is one of the classiest broads i know.  & if you’ve met her you would probably agree with that statement. she is beautiful, intelligent, funny & oozes every other positive adjective i could ever think of.  i’d like to think that i got my passion for fashion, interior decorating & entertaining directly from her. growing up my mom never walked out of the door without being perfectly put together & it’s the same today. her signature is the big blonde hair & the red lips! she has turned houses into homes with her personal touches & has brought our family & other families together with her talent to host the best parties. i love her more than words.  it may be a couple days late in the blog world, but happy mother’s day to my mom.

a great legacy, a great loss, a great life.

yesterday the world lost THE most influential hair dresser of all time. VIDAL SASSOON revolutionized they way woman wore their hair & the way hair dressers cut it today.  he was an inspiration not only to hair dressers but to the world.  the team over at bumble & bumble couldn’t have said it better , “We are deeply saddened to learn of Vidal Sassoon’s passing. An innovator and architect for our craft, he revolutionized hairdressing and elevated the bar for our entire industry. Mr. Sassoon was an immense influence for beauty and fashion in the 20th century and a pop culture touchstone, and we mourn the loss of one of our cherished Hair Heroes.”  at 84, he died peacefully with his family leaving an amazing legacy. my skills are a direct influence of his passion & innovation & i’m forever thankful.  what a life!!!!!

if you’re not familiar with the life & work of VIDAL SASSOON, a must see is VIDAL SASSOON THE MOVIE.  it’s the inspirational story of his life that everyone will feel moved by.  get to it diamondcats!

a hair dresser’s POV

a clean graduated bob.

perfectly sectioned hi lites for summer fun!

things are getting busy at the salon! going lighter & shorter have always been & are some definite trends for summer time. i love change! all my friends & family can attest to that since over the years i’ve had hair almost every color and cut.  i may have once even looked like the ultimate diamoncat, the diamondog himself, david bowie!  as a stylist, yes we do all the man work, but sometimes it’s a collaboration of visions & efforts.  here are a few tips from a stylist’s POV to make that salon experience more fulfilling for you!

1.  bring some inspiration!  if you’re ready for a change, having a vision is always the first step. when looking at pictures, look at cuts & color that reflect your actual hair type.  if you have thick curly hair & you’re looking at pictures of girls with fine straight hair, you will be thoroughly disappointed when you walk out of the salon & you don’t look like the picture.

2.  know that we, stylists, are not mind readers!  if you are looking for a huge change, say it!!  we embrace change, but with change needs to be assurance.  i’ve had clients bring in four pictures of long layered cuts & then one picture of a pixie cut they THINK they one day want.  if you’re bringing in that picture because that’s what you really want, you must say it! otherwise there’s going to be some hesitation from the stylist if you’re not ready to go for the gold. my motto is, when it’s gone, it’s gone, so if you’re not mentally prepared for that pixie wait it out until you are. the last thing we want is for you to think we talked you into it & curse our name to the heavens above when you get home!

3.  you are our canvas, sit still!  if picasso was painting that weeping woman in an earthquake, she would REALLY be distraught.  as stylists, we’ve become used to people moving  & working around it, but if you’re looking for the best results possible keeping your head still ensures you’re going to get a cleaner hi light & a more precision hair cut.

4.  product is your friend! on a daily basis i hear “can you just go home with me & do my hair every morning?!”  as much as i would love to do your hair & have you make me breakfast every morning, that’s impossible!  what i can do is give you tips on how to recreate that style at home & product is an essential part.  sometimes all your hair needs are one or two products.  if you’re looking for volume, texture or just something to help with frizz, no matter how i’ve used my blow dryer or other tools, it doesn’t happen without the aid of a specific one or two products. invest in products to help you recreate that look at home!

5.  pre book your next appointment!  on average you should be getting your hair cut and touched up every 6 to 8 weeks.  yes, 6 to 8 weeks.  we all want healthy shiny hair & making sure those ends are split free is the first way to achieve that.  once you get split ends, they just want to creep higher & higher. the ONLY way to avoid that is to cut them off at the source before they even get a chance to work their way up. because you & your stylist are amazingly busy, pre booking your appointment ensures you’re getting in at the time that works best for you and your hair doesn’t go unattended to.

ready?! call your stylist and lets get summer sassy!!

team gloom.

there has been a power struggle with the sun & the clouds here in san diego lately, but i don’t mind. all this gloomy, cooler weather is letting me get my final wear out of my tights and long sleeved attire.  my dear friend sheri over at tangerine tree photography came over the other day to document an outfit i wore out over the weekend.

top, vest, & shorts all oldies but goodies from forever21.shoes by ecote from urban outfitters. glasses by toms. & an oldie purse from anthropologie.

necklace from h&m. vintage bracelet & fun new york/brooklyn find. & my three ring obsessions: opal ring by catbird, double spade ring by kate spade & a gift of love from my grandpa to my grandma inherited by yours truly.
